Narrative:

I departed with 40 gallons of fuel. One hour and thirty minutes in flight I was cleared to land on runway xxl at [my destination]. On downwind engine started missing. I notified tower of engine missing; would prefer runway xr. Tower asked if it was an emergency and how much fuel and how many people were onboard. I replied; 'no; it sounds like a magneto; 9 gallons; and three people on board. Tower replied; 'cleared to land runway xr.' on short final engine died and I landed and stopped on runway xr.intermittent power loss is undetermined at this point. Mechanic will checkout the engine to determine the cause.
