Narrative:

Approaching approximately 4;000 feet during descent with the engines at idle and airspeed of 250 knots; the left engine simply failed. We had no unusual indications or obvious causes. We were in VMC with the airport in sight. We declared an emergency with ATC; accomplished appropriate QRH and normal checklist procedures and landed uneventfully. After a visual check by arff vehicles; we completed an uneventful taxi to the gate.maintenance personnel determined the cause to be failure of a component associated with the fuel control unit.
