Narrative:

I had arrived at calexico from mexicali to clear us customs. Before landing I called calexico unicom for the active runway and was advised it was runway 26. I landed, cleared customs, and had a bite to eat. Several other planes landed during this time, all using runway 26. The WX continued as it was when I landed, with wind west at about 5-10 KTS. I did not check again with unicom before taking off, but broadcast my intention of taking off on runway 26. At about the same time another plane announced it was entering a right downwind. I looked for it, did not spot it, and took off. As I took off the other plane announced a right base. Neither time did he specify which runway, but calexico only uses a right pattern for runway 26. As I climbed out through about 200' the other plane passed beneath and to the right of me, landing on runway 8. I called him on the unicom frequency and said that he should have announced he was landing on runway 8, and I would not then have taken off. He replied indignantly that he was landing on the runway specified by unicom. Two other planes arrived in the area immediately after this and unicom gave them runway 26. I believe the other plane became confused and landed on 8 thinking he was landing on 26. While I probably should have checked with unicom before taking off, it is not required and would probably not have alleviated the situation.

Narrative: I HAD ARRIVED AT CALEXICO FROM MEXICALI TO CLEAR U.S. CUSTOMS. BEFORE LNDG I CALLED CALEXICO UNICOM FOR THE ACTIVE RWY AND WAS ADVISED IT WAS RWY 26. I LANDED, CLRED CUSTOMS, AND HAD A BITE TO EAT. SEVERAL OTHER PLANES LANDED DURING THIS TIME, ALL USING RWY 26. THE WX CONTINUED AS IT WAS WHEN I LANDED, WITH WIND W AT ABOUT 5-10 KTS. I DID NOT CHK AGAIN WITH UNICOM BEFORE TAKING OFF, BUT BROADCAST MY INTENTION OF TAKING OFF ON RWY 26. AT ABOUT THE SAME TIME ANOTHER PLANE ANNOUNCED IT WAS ENTERING A RIGHT DOWNWIND. I LOOKED FOR IT, DID NOT SPOT IT, AND TOOK OFF. AS I TOOK OFF THE OTHER PLANE ANNOUNCED A RIGHT BASE. NEITHER TIME DID HE SPECIFY WHICH RWY, BUT CALEXICO ONLY USES A RIGHT PATTERN FOR RWY 26. AS I CLBED OUT THROUGH ABOUT 200' THE OTHER PLANE PASSED BENEATH AND TO THE RIGHT OF ME, LNDG ON RWY 8. I CALLED HIM ON THE UNICOM FREQ AND SAID THAT HE SHOULD HAVE ANNOUNCED HE WAS LNDG ON RWY 8, AND I WOULD NOT THEN HAVE TAKEN OFF. HE REPLIED INDIGNANTLY THAT HE WAS LNDG ON THE RWY SPECIFIED BY UNICOM. TWO OTHER PLANES ARRIVED IN THE AREA IMMEDIATELY AFTER THIS AND UNICOM GAVE THEM RWY 26. I BELIEVE THE OTHER PLANE BECAME CONFUSED AND LANDED ON 8 THINKING HE WAS LNDG ON 26. WHILE I PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE CHKED WITH UNICOM BEFORE TAKING OFF, IT IS NOT REQUIRED AND WOULD PROBABLY NOT HAVE ALLEVIATED THE SITUATION.
