Narrative:

We were dead heading crew members from sfo to smf. When we deplaned at smf I walked over to what I thought was my medium large transport to start the preflight. I was almost to the aircraft when a ramp service person informed me that I could not walk across the ramp and that I should walk back across the ramp and go through the terminal. When I asked him whose rule this was, he replied it was an airport rule, not an far. I then elected to walk another 30' to our operations. I had determined that this medium large transport was not the one we were going to fly. I was later informed by security that we had violated far 107! I have never seen anything that said a pilot could not walk across his company's ramp. If this is true, someone had better get the word out! Supplemental information from acn 107890: ramp personnel told us we couldn't walk on ramp. Since we were under the tail of our own aircraft we refused (we were in uniform and had identify badges). Security chief located us and told us we were in violation of far's for security. Some crew knowledge needs to be disseminated and signs or other ramp security boundaries need to be established. Also more reasonable standards for crew security boundaries need to be established.

Title: UNIFORMED PERSONNEL WALKING FROM ONE ACFT TOWARD ANOTHER ACFT ON RAMP. SECURITY STOPPED AND REQUIRED ENTRY TO TERMINAL. CREW REFUSED.

Narrative: WE WERE DEAD HEADING CREW MEMBERS FROM SFO TO SMF. WHEN WE DEPLANED AT SMF I WALKED OVER TO WHAT I THOUGHT WAS MY MLG TO START THE PREFLT. I WAS ALMOST TO THE ACFT WHEN A RAMP SVC PERSON INFORMED ME THAT I COULD NOT WALK ACROSS THE RAMP AND THAT I SHOULD WALK BACK ACROSS THE RAMP AND GO THROUGH THE TERMINAL. WHEN I ASKED HIM WHOSE RULE THIS WAS, HE REPLIED IT WAS AN ARPT RULE, NOT AN FAR. I THEN ELECTED TO WALK ANOTHER 30' TO OUR OPS. I HAD DETERMINED THAT THIS MLG WAS NOT THE ONE WE WERE GOING TO FLY. I WAS LATER INFORMED BY SECURITY THAT WE HAD VIOLATED FAR 107! I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING THAT SAID A PLT COULD NOT WALK ACROSS HIS COMPANY'S RAMP. IF THIS IS TRUE, SOMEONE HAD BETTER GET THE WORD OUT! SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 107890: RAMP PERSONNEL TOLD US WE COULDN'T WALK ON RAMP. SINCE WE WERE UNDER THE TAIL OF OUR OWN ACFT WE REFUSED (WE WERE IN UNIFORM AND HAD IDENT BADGES).
