Narrative:

Taxiing south going to [runway] xxl; got an ECAM gen 1 fault. Few seconds later; ECAM warning of engine failure. Asked ground for a place to come to a stop. After not hearing a response right away; rolled to a stop. Ground then advised he observed smoke coming from the left engine. Begin running emergency evacuation checklist; asked ground to send fire trucks. Smoke was confirmed outside the captain's window. Opened right entry door and egressed via the slide. Fire trucks arrived and observed smoke from the engine and applied water. Fire department confirmed everyone [was] okay. Airport manager pulled up [and] offered his truck to get out of the cold. He then asked us where we needed to go; and provided us a ride. Once inside; I called the duty officer to fill him in and ask for instructions. Was told to standby. I called dispatch to find out their thoughts. He informed me that a trans load was planned with a new gate and tail number. He would have a new release shortly. Signed the new flight release; arranged a bus; and headed to [the disabled aircraft] to get our bags enroute to the new aircraft. Maintenance was aboard; and he asked what happened. [I] gave him a full briefing on all events and indications. Proceeded to other aircraft and continued with the trip. I do remember when we were in the airport manager's vehicle [asking] about how to make a writeup with the aml still in the plane. Then it never occurred to me again.
