Narrative:

The 1/2 hour VFR trip from ccb to vny was uneventful. However, during dinner the WX changed to 1000' overcast with tops about 3500'. After checking the WX and loading the plane I radioed clearance delivery and asked for burfg (a so ca terminal route) from vny to cable. The clearance read: 'cleared to cable glendale 4 V186 PD2 mt 4000', expect 5000' 5 mins, departure frequency 124.6, squawk 5113.' I read back the clearance correctly but in my mind I was thinking (bur foxtrot 6) while I was saying (glendale 4). Since no headings were given to intercept V186 I asked how long I should maintain runway heading. I was told to go about 1 mi before turning left. (At this time I was still unaware that glendale 4 was a SID for vny airport.) after departing I maintained runway heading for 1 mi, then entered the clouds and turned left to intercept the 096 degree right V186. I switched radios to bur and then had me on radar. After about 90 seconds bur asked my heading. I said 090 degrees (I was going to intercept 096 degrees) and informed me that the SID states 110 degrees until you get radar vectors. I am a new instrument rating and will need to get further training. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: reporter states he had his mind set on the route he had filed, bur foxtrot 6. He used that in his training and that's what he knew. He did have his instrument charts with him. He says, it sounds crazy now, but he just never thought anything was different so did not check charts. He has returned for further instrument training.

Title: FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH SID REQUIREMENTS.

Narrative: THE 1/2 HR VFR TRIP FROM CCB TO VNY WAS UNEVENTFUL. HOWEVER, DURING DINNER THE WX CHANGED TO 1000' OVCST WITH TOPS ABOUT 3500'. AFTER CHKING THE WX AND LOADING THE PLANE I RADIOED CLRNC DELIVERY AND ASKED FOR BURFG (A SO CA TERMINAL ROUTE) FROM VNY TO CABLE. THE CLRNC READ: 'CLRED TO CABLE GLENDALE 4 V186 PD2 MT 4000', EXPECT 5000' 5 MINS, DEP FREQ 124.6, SQUAWK 5113.' I READ BACK THE CLRNC CORRECTLY BUT IN MY MIND I WAS THINKING (BUR FOXTROT 6) WHILE I WAS SAYING (GLENDALE 4). SINCE NO HDGS WERE GIVEN TO INTERCEPT V186 I ASKED HOW LONG I SHOULD MAINTAIN RWY HDG. I WAS TOLD TO GO ABOUT 1 MI BEFORE TURNING LEFT. (AT THIS TIME I WAS STILL UNAWARE THAT GLENDALE 4 WAS A SID FOR VNY ARPT.) AFTER DEPARTING I MAINTAINED RWY HDG FOR 1 MI, THEN ENTERED THE CLOUDS AND TURNED LEFT TO INTERCEPT THE 096 DEG R V186. I SWITCHED RADIOS TO BUR AND THEN HAD ME ON RADAR. AFTER ABOUT 90 SECS BUR ASKED MY HDG. I SAID 090 DEGS (I WAS GOING TO INTERCEPT 096 DEGS) AND INFORMED ME THAT THE SID STATES 110 DEGS UNTIL YOU GET RADAR VECTORS. I AM A NEW INSTRUMENT RATING AND WILL NEED TO GET FURTHER TRNING. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: RPTR STATES HE HAD HIS MIND SET ON THE ROUTE HE HAD FILED, BUR FOXTROT 6. HE USED THAT IN HIS TRNING AND THAT'S WHAT HE KNEW. HE DID HAVE HIS INSTRUMENT CHARTS WITH HIM. HE SAYS, IT SOUNDS CRAZY NOW, BUT HE JUST NEVER THOUGHT ANYTHING WAS DIFFERENT SO DID NOT CHK CHARTS. HE HAS RETURNED FOR FURTHER INSTRUMENT TRNING.
