Narrative:

I was flying with a new first officer. It was his leg and we were going to do a water injected takeoff. He said that he had never done one in the airplane, just in the simulator, so I was going to great pains to brief him on procedures (or rather to review procedures). We had picked up our clearance but had been told to hold for release. We were taking off from an uncontrolled field and when we reached the end of the runway we just took off. The first officer questioned whether or not we'd been released and I said 'yeah,' but I was so preoccupied with the water injected takeoff and making sure that we didn't exceed engine limitations that I really hadn't paid attention to his question. Once we switched to departure the controller informed us that we had not been released. Fortunately there wasn't anyone else inbound on an IFR flight plan and the WX was VFR. I simply became so preoccupied with the water injected takeoff procedures that I didn't pay enough attention to our clearance. Supplemental information from acn 107480: while the captain was taxiing the aircraft out to the runway I copied the clearance as filed up to 10000'. Also the controller instructed us to contact him for a release when we were ready for takeoff. The captain did not hear any of this since I had a separate audio panel from him. As we reached the end of the runway the captain transferred control of the aircraft to me and he then assumed the duties of talking on the radio. Shortly after I took control of the airplane, the captain told me that we had been cleared for takeoff. I responded by asking him if we were released. He answered we were, so I proceeded to takeoff. The remedy for this situation is better communications in the cockpit.

Title: DUE TO COCKPIT DISTRS AND COCKPIT PROCEDURAL REVIEW AND BRIEFING, FLT DEPARTED FROM UNCONTROLLED ARPT IFR WITHOUT DEP RELEASE.

Narrative: I WAS FLYING WITH A NEW F/O. IT WAS HIS LEG AND WE WERE GOING TO DO A WATER INJECTED TKOF. HE SAID THAT HE HAD NEVER DONE ONE IN THE AIRPLANE, JUST IN THE SIMULATOR, SO I WAS GOING TO GREAT PAINS TO BRIEF HIM ON PROCS (OR RATHER TO REVIEW PROCS). WE HAD PICKED UP OUR CLRNC BUT HAD BEEN TOLD TO HOLD FOR RELEASE. WE WERE TAKING OFF FROM AN UNCONTROLLED FIELD AND WHEN WE REACHED THE END OF THE RWY WE JUST TOOK OFF. THE F/O QUESTIONED WHETHER OR NOT WE'D BEEN RELEASED AND I SAID 'YEAH,' BUT I WAS SO PREOCCUPIED WITH THE WATER INJECTED TKOF AND MAKING SURE THAT WE DIDN'T EXCEED ENG LIMITATIONS THAT I REALLY HADN'T PAID ATTN TO HIS QUESTION. ONCE WE SWITCHED TO DEP THE CTLR INFORMED US THAT WE HAD NOT BEEN RELEASED. FORTUNATELY THERE WASN'T ANYONE ELSE INBND ON AN IFR FLT PLAN AND THE WX WAS VFR. I SIMPLY BECAME SO PREOCCUPIED WITH THE WATER INJECTED TKOF PROCS THAT I DIDN'T PAY ENOUGH ATTN TO OUR CLRNC. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 107480: WHILE THE CAPT WAS TAXIING THE ACFT OUT TO THE RWY I COPIED THE CLRNC AS FILED UP TO 10000'. ALSO THE CTLR INSTRUCTED US TO CONTACT HIM FOR A RELEASE WHEN WE WERE READY FOR TKOF. THE CAPT DID NOT HEAR ANY OF THIS SINCE I HAD A SEPARATE AUDIO PANEL FROM HIM. AS WE REACHED THE END OF THE RWY THE CAPT TRANSFERRED CTL OF THE ACFT TO ME AND HE THEN ASSUMED THE DUTIES OF TALKING ON THE RADIO. SHORTLY AFTER I TOOK CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE, THE CAPT TOLD ME THAT WE HAD BEEN CLRED FOR TKOF. I RESPONDED BY ASKING HIM IF WE WERE RELEASED. HE ANSWERED WE WERE, SO I PROCEEDED TO TKOF. THE REMEDY FOR THIS SITUATION IS BETTER COMS IN THE COCKPIT.
