Narrative:

I left addison direct to tki. VFR flight following was provided until I was approximately 7 mi from airport. I switched to CTAF (123.0). I followed another aircraft through a 45 degree entry to downwind from east of the pattern at 1600' MSL, announcing my position. Similar actions/reports through base and final. On final, on visibility G/south (PAPI) and approximately 20' left of center line, a pilot on the taxiway advised that 2 aircraft were on final together. I looked straight up first, then right, and finally left. An small aircraft was turning to final approximately 150' from my aircraft. I was less than 1/4 mi from threshold at approximately 400' AGL. I advised that I was aborting my approach to the west of the runway, and made a climbing turn to my right, circled to south of runway 17/35, and re-entered pattern for a full stop and a prayer of thanks. The small aircraft continued landing and did 1 or 2 more touch and go's before parking aircraft. Small aircraft pilot was student with 37+ hours, solo. Surprising unshaken by event. Aircraft on taxiway later returned to tki and discussed his point of view with me. That pilot claims that small aircraft was on downwind and turned to base approximately 1/4 mi past threshold. Also, pilot reported that my xmissions on the CTAF were 'very clear.' airport is west of pattern, forcing pilot to look into sun when looking for traffic. Sun very low at XA00, making pilot on base look into sun to search for aircraft. It can be very difficult to see aircraft. During late afternoon I was too focused on slight crosswind correction and PAPI. I should have looked for other aircraft during my final. I always look before turning final, but close to the ground I am focused on my approach. Small aircraft students should also be taught more re: matching pattern traffic. All aircraft do not fly 60 KTS in the pattern and a busy airport often has aircraft on extended downwind, base and final. Problems at tki: very busy. Very busy! Needs tower. CTAF (123.0) shared with too many other airports in vicinity, making CTAF often busier than the tki pattern.

Title: SMA ON FINAL APCH HAS NMAC WITH ANOTHER SMA ON BASE LEG TURNING FINAL.

Narrative: I LEFT ADDISON DIRECT TO TKI. VFR FLT FOLLOWING WAS PROVIDED UNTIL I WAS APPROX 7 MI FROM ARPT. I SWITCHED TO CTAF (123.0). I FOLLOWED ANOTHER ACFT THROUGH A 45 DEG ENTRY TO DOWNWIND FROM E OF THE PATTERN AT 1600' MSL, ANNOUNCING MY POS. SIMILAR ACTIONS/RPTS THROUGH BASE AND FINAL. ON FINAL, ON VIS G/S (PAPI) AND APPROX 20' LEFT OF CENTER LINE, A PLT ON THE TXWY ADVISED THAT 2 ACFT WERE ON FINAL TOGETHER. I LOOKED STRAIGHT UP FIRST, THEN RIGHT, AND FINALLY LEFT. AN SMA WAS TURNING TO FINAL APPROX 150' FROM MY ACFT. I WAS LESS THAN 1/4 MI FROM THRESHOLD AT APPROX 400' AGL. I ADVISED THAT I WAS ABORTING MY APCH TO THE W OF THE RWY, AND MADE A CLBING TURN TO MY RIGHT, CIRCLED TO S OF RWY 17/35, AND RE-ENTERED PATTERN FOR A FULL STOP AND A PRAYER OF THANKS. THE SMA CONTINUED LNDG AND DID 1 OR 2 MORE TOUCH AND GO'S BEFORE PARKING ACFT. SMA PLT WAS STUDENT WITH 37+ HRS, SOLO. SURPRISING UNSHAKEN BY EVENT. ACFT ON TXWY LATER RETURNED TO TKI AND DISCUSSED HIS POINT OF VIEW WITH ME. THAT PLT CLAIMS THAT SMA WAS ON DOWNWIND AND TURNED TO BASE APPROX 1/4 MI PAST THRESHOLD. ALSO, PLT RPTED THAT MY XMISSIONS ON THE CTAF WERE 'VERY CLEAR.' ARPT IS W OF PATTERN, FORCING PLT TO LOOK INTO SUN WHEN LOOKING FOR TFC. SUN VERY LOW AT XA00, MAKING PLT ON BASE LOOK INTO SUN TO SEARCH FOR ACFT. IT CAN BE VERY DIFFICULT TO SEE ACFT. DURING LATE AFTERNOON I WAS TOO FOCUSED ON SLIGHT XWIND CORRECTION AND PAPI. I SHOULD HAVE LOOKED FOR OTHER ACFT DURING MY FINAL. I ALWAYS LOOK BEFORE TURNING FINAL, BUT CLOSE TO THE GND I AM FOCUSED ON MY APCH. SMA STUDENTS SHOULD ALSO BE TAUGHT MORE RE: MATCHING PATTERN TFC. ALL ACFT DO NOT FLY 60 KTS IN THE PATTERN AND A BUSY ARPT OFTEN HAS ACFT ON EXTENDED DOWNWIND, BASE AND FINAL. PROBS AT TKI: VERY BUSY. VERY BUSY! NEEDS TWR. CTAF (123.0) SHARED WITH TOO MANY OTHER ARPTS IN VICINITY, MAKING CTAF OFTEN BUSIER THAN THE TKI PATTERN.
