Narrative:

I was on a left downwind for runway 17 and advised of an aircraft, small aircraft Y to my right. He was only 50' away, also downwind. I did not see the aircraft prior to being advised by the tower. He must have been making a 45 degree entry from the east and did not see me. The tower said they had a trainee on at the time and failed to advise me sooner.
