Narrative:

[We were] established on final [when] I called for the gear down; landing checklist. The captain lowered the landing gear handle and we both noticed the left main landing gear light did not illuminate. After a very brief discussion we both decided not to attempt a landing. At approximately 1;000 feet we executed a normal go around and were cleared to 4;000 feet. At 4;000 feet we were vectored by ATC allowing time to declare an emergency; execute the gear disagree [checklist] and review the partial gear landing checklist. After executing the appropriate checklists we were vectored to final; executed an uneventful landing and stopped straight ahead on runway.
