Narrative:

Over llano VOR, received and read back frequency change thought to be 134.5. Checked on with new controller FL240 (previously assigned altitude). He thought we said air carrier B bbc, our call sign was air carrier a aac. Their xmissions were weak and garbled and so were we to him. We received a clearance to descend to 11000'. Then, after a while, we were told to hold FL200, proceed direct hogge. Being somewhat familiar with the area, we never heard of hogge! We pulled out our charts and began to query ATC. It was at this point we became aware of being at the wrong frequency, wrong altitude, and receiving a clearance for the wrong aircraft. We backtracked to the previous controller and he gave us a new frequency. On the new frequency we checked on and immediately explained the situation to the new controller (still at FL200). He said, 'no problem,' and we continued on our profile per clearance. Contributing factors: weak frequency and lack of awareness of pilots/controllers. Complete 'communication' breakdown. Before being handed off to approach control, I requested center's phone #. Supervisor and I had a friendly talk afterwards. Both of us concluded it was a mistake on all parties with a twist of coincidences. Foremostly, my first officer and I firmly believe we were given the wrong frequency. I read it back as 134.5--just as I received it. Of course I never argued this fact with ATC or the supervisor.

Title: ACR MLG FREQ CHANGE MISSED REPLIES TO WRONG CALL SIGN AND DEVIATES FROM ASSIGNED ALT.

Narrative: OVER LLANO VOR, RECEIVED AND READ BACK FREQ CHANGE THOUGHT TO BE 134.5. CHKED ON WITH NEW CTLR FL240 (PREVIOUSLY ASSIGNED ALT). HE THOUGHT WE SAID ACR B BBC, OUR CALL SIGN WAS ACR A AAC. THEIR XMISSIONS WERE WEAK AND GARBLED AND SO WERE WE TO HIM. WE RECEIVED A CLRNC TO DSND TO 11000'. THEN, AFTER A WHILE, WE WERE TOLD TO HOLD FL200, PROCEED DIRECT HOGGE. BEING SOMEWHAT FAMILIAR WITH THE AREA, WE NEVER HEARD OF HOGGE! WE PULLED OUT OUR CHARTS AND BEGAN TO QUERY ATC. IT WAS AT THIS POINT WE BECAME AWARE OF BEING AT THE WRONG FREQ, WRONG ALT, AND RECEIVING A CLRNC FOR THE WRONG ACFT. WE BACKTRACKED TO THE PREVIOUS CTLR AND HE GAVE US A NEW FREQ. ON THE NEW FREQ WE CHKED ON AND IMMEDIATELY EXPLAINED THE SITUATION TO THE NEW CTLR (STILL AT FL200). HE SAID, 'NO PROB,' AND WE CONTINUED ON OUR PROFILE PER CLRNC. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: WEAK FREQ AND LACK OF AWARENESS OF PLTS/CTLRS. COMPLETE 'COM' BREAKDOWN. BEFORE BEING HANDED OFF TO APCH CTL, I REQUESTED CENTER'S PHONE #. SUPVR AND I HAD A FRIENDLY TALK AFTERWARDS. BOTH OF US CONCLUDED IT WAS A MISTAKE ON ALL PARTIES WITH A TWIST OF COINCIDENCES. FOREMOSTLY, MY F/O AND I FIRMLY BELIEVE WE WERE GIVEN THE WRONG FREQ. I READ IT BACK AS 134.5--JUST AS I RECEIVED IT. OF COURSE I NEVER ARGUED THIS FACT WITH ATC OR THE SUPVR.
