Narrative:

Small transport departed beech field in wichita at approximately xxam local for in-flight checks on aircraft autoplt and navigation systems which had recently undergone repairs. The flight consisted of VFR airwork to hutchinson, ks, where 2 ILS approachs were flown and then a return leg to beech field. ATC flight following was not utilized during the flight. On the return leg to wichita, at 5500', navigation equipment checks were still in process when radio equipment appeared to malfunction on beech factory tower frequency of 126.8. Numerous calls were initiated attempting to obtain radio contact to report our position. Finally, after numerous manipulations with the radio equipment, contact with beech tower was established. The increased crew workload precipitated by the equipment chkouts and subsequent communication problems resulted in a late descent thereby effecting entry into the wichita arsa. In the future I will utilize wichita approach flight following for all VFR flts to assist in preventing this situation from happening.

Title: ENTERED ARSA WITHOUT CONTACT.

Narrative: SMT DEPARTED BEECH FIELD IN WICHITA AT APPROX XXAM LCL FOR INFLT CHKS ON ACFT AUTOPLT AND NAV SYSTEMS WHICH HAD RECENTLY UNDERGONE REPAIRS. THE FLT CONSISTED OF VFR AIRWORK TO HUTCHINSON, KS, WHERE 2 ILS APCHS WERE FLOWN AND THEN A RETURN LEG TO BEECH FIELD. ATC FLT FOLLOWING WAS NOT UTILIZED DURING THE FLT. ON THE RETURN LEG TO WICHITA, AT 5500', NAV EQUIP CHKS WERE STILL IN PROCESS WHEN RADIO EQUIP APPEARED TO MALFUNCTION ON BEECH FACTORY TWR FREQ OF 126.8. NUMEROUS CALLS WERE INITIATED ATTEMPTING TO OBTAIN RADIO CONTACT TO RPT OUR POS. FINALLY, AFTER NUMEROUS MANIPULATIONS WITH THE RADIO EQUIP, CONTACT WITH BEECH TWR WAS ESTABLISHED. THE INCREASED CREW WORKLOAD PRECIPITATED BY THE EQUIP CHKOUTS AND SUBSEQUENT COM PROBS RESULTED IN A LATE DSCNT THEREBY EFFECTING ENTRY INTO THE WICHITA ARSA. IN THE FUTURE I WILL UTILIZE WICHITA APCH FLT FOLLOWING FOR ALL VFR FLTS TO ASSIST IN PREVENTING THIS SITUATION FROM HAPPENING.
