On approach; when first officer turned hydraulic pumps to hi; left system quantity and pressure went to zero. Accomplished checklist; declared emergency; landed and taxied to gate without incident.

Title: During descent when a MD-82 Left Hydraulic System was selected to HI/ON/CHECKED; the Master Caution and LEFT HYD LOW PRESS lights illuminated. An emergency was declared; the QRH completed and a normal landing followed.
