Narrative:

After departure from runway 10 at syr, we contacted departure control and received a clearance to turn left to 280 degrees. We read the clearance back with emphasis on the word left as this direction of turn was not logical for a southern route of flight. An medium large transport Y had departed before us and was also headed in the same geographical area. Our climbing turn to 280 degrees rapidly showed us turning somewhat inside medium large transport Y flight path. What was transpiring was similar to a running rendezvous in formation flying. I made the comment to departure after the traffic conflict was in no way called by him for close to 1 min, 'did he want us to join up on medium large transport Y?' my tone was sarcastic as I was amazed at the situation, especially with no call from ATC as to visibility sep. The controller responded by stating that I had been issued a right turn to 280 degrees, but that I could continue in my left turn to 280 degrees. I responded that we had been issued a left turn and had read back left. We proceeded to destination west/O further incident. I have since had syr tower pull the tapes and was told by supervisor at syr that we were correct in regards to being issued a left turn. Of course the controller is off the hook! I am tired of being guilty until proving my own innocence. ATC holds all the cards and the pilots sometimes have no recourse.

Title: MLG GIVEN LEFT TURN TO WESTERLY HEADING BY DEP CTLR, WHICH WAS LONG WAY AROUND, SAW OTHER TRAFFIC AND QUESTIONED CTLR.

Narrative: AFTER DEP FROM RWY 10 AT SYR, WE CONTACTED DEP CTL AND RECEIVED A CLRNC TO TURN LEFT TO 280 DEGS. WE READ THE CLRNC BACK WITH EMPHASIS ON THE WORD LEFT AS THIS DIRECTION OF TURN WAS NOT LOGICAL FOR A SOUTHERN ROUTE OF FLT. AN MLG Y HAD DEPARTED BEFORE US AND WAS ALSO HEADED IN THE SAME GEOGRAPHICAL AREA. OUR CLBING TURN TO 280 DEGS RAPIDLY SHOWED US TURNING SOMEWHAT INSIDE MLG Y FLT PATH. WHAT WAS TRANSPIRING WAS SIMILAR TO A RUNNING RENDEZVOUS IN FORMATION FLYING. I MADE THE COMMENT TO DEP AFTER THE TFC CONFLICT WAS IN NO WAY CALLED BY HIM FOR CLOSE TO 1 MIN, 'DID HE WANT US TO JOIN UP ON MLG Y?' MY TONE WAS SARCASTIC AS I WAS AMAZED AT THE SITUATION, ESPECIALLY WITH NO CALL FROM ATC AS TO VIS SEP. THE CTLR RESPONDED BY STATING THAT I HAD BEEN ISSUED A RIGHT TURN TO 280 DEGS, BUT THAT I COULD CONTINUE IN MY LEFT TURN TO 280 DEGS. I RESPONDED THAT WE HAD BEEN ISSUED A LEFT TURN AND HAD READ BACK LEFT. WE PROCEEDED TO DEST W/O FURTHER INCIDENT. I HAVE SINCE HAD SYR TWR PULL THE TAPES AND WAS TOLD BY SUPVR AT SYR THAT WE WERE CORRECT IN REGARDS TO BEING ISSUED A LEFT TURN. OF COURSE THE CTLR IS OFF THE HOOK! I AM TIRED OF BEING GUILTY UNTIL PROVING MY OWN INNOCENCE. ATC HOLDS ALL THE CARDS AND THE PLTS SOMETIMES HAVE NO RECOURSE.
